Munich - Day 2

Starts with a family breakfast.. ..except we are still missing Chris, who in his inimitable style has turned up at the wrong airport to catch his flight,(???!!!) and so must do some fancy juggling and meet us later in the day.

In time honoured tradition, Tim orders the most interesting and entertaining item on the menu. In this instance it is the Münchener breakfast .. what arrives is a very large beer, a very large pretzle and a bowl of water with two fat white sausages floating in it. He tucks in.. The rest of us munch away on our muesli, secretly relieved to have been safe, and cheer Tim on.

Happy with our respective breakfasts we undertake our first day of sightseeing.. the glockenspiel which encourages dancing from Megs and Christopher..who are simultaneously chomping on delicious strawberries,
followed by a a round of churches. We climb the belfry on Frauenkirche.Oddly, although we had intended to visit a few church belfries on our holiday, this was the only one we did.

The favourite church of the day, and right up there in the top 3 for the trip was the Jesuit Church of St Michael.
It houses the tomb of Mad King Ludwig 11.. we came across this quite by accident, and were very glad we had, as poor mad Ludwig became a focal point of our first week when we visited his castles and we learnt quite a deal about the man, so it was nice to have seen his place of rest.. His tomb was a very simple metal casket without much in the way of embellishments except for a crown on top, sitting on the floor in a crypt under the church, along with many of his relatives. It was a most unprepossessing tomb compared with many we saw later in our travels.

In the afternoon, we ate under the maypole at the Viktuallenmarkt, then visited the Residenz ( a former palace of the Bavarian kings). ( lots and lots of rooms and long corridors).
The highlight of the day comes when Chris has arrived and we all troop to the al frescoe tables at the Hofgarten, catch up on each others' activities and photos and have a couple of beers.

We finish the day with a meal in the outdoor restaurant opposite the rathaus... -more meat and potato blobs, but a great view:)
